The purpose of this survey was to investigate of sexual development of children who were during early adolescent in cross-sectional basis and compare the degree of sexual development among childrens of Hongchon, Suwon, and Seoul which
prepresenting
rural, suburban, and urban areas, respectively. The number of children enrolled our survey was 1632 subjects which comprised of 868 body and 764 girls, ranging from 9 to 12 years old.
We estimated stage of sexual maturity rating (SMR) of childrens according to the schema of Tanner and also have interviewed about the experience of menarche.
@ES The results of our survey were as follows:
1. We could observe the normal sexual developmental stage as to their age were growing older and children in Seoul with relatively affluent socio-economic environment have shown earlier stage of sexual development more than those of other areas.
2. There were significant geographic differences of pubic hair develoment in 12 years-old girls, of penile development in 10, 11-years old, of breast development in 12-years old girls, of testicular development in 11, 12-years old and of
experience
of
menarche in 12-old-years.
3. In comparison with foreign children in literature, there were no significant diffrence in sexual developmental stages.
4. In boys, the development of pubic hair, penis, and testes were highly correlated with height, weight, chest circumference, head circumference, mid-arm circumference, and muscle area. In the development of pubic hair, breast and menarche of
girls
were
also highly correlated with height, weight, chest circumference, mid-arm circumference, subcutaneous skin-fold thickness, fat area, Rohler index, and Kaup index.
